Tuesday, December 17th 2019 - 3

- Students participated in reading centers and attended music.
- Our S4 came to visit our classroom for a health lesson about peer pressure. Ask me what I learned!
- Students continued to listen to the City of Ember (Chapter 17/18). We will be completing the next chapters during the morning of Wednesday and Thursday.
- While some students completed their Social Studies projects, other spent time applying social skills while playing games with peers.

No posts on Wednesday and Thursday as we will be at COP for the day!

- In Social Studies, students finished their presentations and recorded a video of their work. Students who are not done will finish tomorrow.
- In Science, students worked on their design and construction.
- In ELA, we continued to read the City of Ember. (Chapter 15-16)
- Students participated in physical education and reading centers.


Homework:
- Bring in library books. (Students received a note of what was late).
- Prepare yourself for skiing and snowboarding.
- Start bring home items from school (ei. water bottles to be cleaned etc.)

- Students continued to put the final touches and edits to their Social Studies presentation based on feedback provided by their teacher.
- Students attend the caroling assembly and read with their readings buddies.

- In Mathematics, students reviewed and practice how to identify and write in a sentence about an alternating pattern. Then students continued to work on our 2-dimensional shape challenges. Students are asked to prove their work. This has been a challenge for many students. Ask me how I am doing?
- In Social Studies, students conferenced with their teacher and continued to complete their final project.
- We read in ELA, completed centers, went to Physical Education and Music.

Monday, Dec 9th 2019

- Students participated in Physical Education and centers.
- In Science, students finished building their solar powered cars. Then reflected upon their strengths and areas of growth as designers and team mates. Students who were completed, worked on their plans and design for their house.
- In Mathematics, students reviewed how to identify a pattern using symbolic representations. Students then began using growing shapes and a table to identify a pattern.



Homework: 
- Bring all books back by Dec. 11th 2019 to Mme N in the learning commons. 
- Prepare yourself for two days of snowboard and skiing. Prepare your materials. Ensure they are warm and comfortable for the day.

- In Mathematics, we began reviewing simple growing patterns with numbers and shapes.
- Students participated in reading centers and Choice and Curiosity.
- In ELA, we listened to chapter 11 and part of 12 of the City of Ember. Students responded to a comprehension questions.

Wednesday, December 4th 2019 - Day 2

- In Mathematics, students reviewed our vocabulary with geometry. Students played a matching game. Then students were introduced to a "low floor/high ceiling" activity.

Definition: Low Floor High Ceiling Tasks are those that all students can access but that can be extended to high levels. ... Low Threshold High Ceiling Tasks are activities that everyone in a group can begin and then work on at their own level of engagement. 

- In Science, students continued to work and develop their solar panel cars. Students reflected upon the work they completed. 
- Students participated in Physical Education and reading centers. 
- Students continued to work identifying the subject, verb and participe passe in a paragraph.

Tuesday, December 3rd 2019 - 1 

- Students participated in reading centers and physical education. 
- In Mathematics, students created videos to describe the types of lines and identify the shapes they created in their art work from yesterday. 
- In Social Studies, students continued to work on their presentations. Teams are currently meeting one-on-one with their teacher to discuss progress, success and next steps. 
- In Science, students collaborated with their peers to design and create their own motorized vehicles using solar panels. Ask me about the work in Science!

Monday, November 3rd 2019 - Day 6

- In Mathematics, students completed multiplication questions after our Number Talk. Students spent the time demonstrating their preferred strategies when multiplying a 2 digit factor by 1 digit. Students then reviewed their quiz from last week. Students then created art using the concept of lines and quadrilaterals we studied last week.
- Students participated in reading centers, ELA, Social Studies and grammar.
- In Science, students review how to build and draw a simple circuit. This time they included a motor.


Homework: 20 minutes
- Reading in French. We are currently focusing our attention on describing events or interactions in our story. Students are to read for 15 minutes and spend 5 minutes working on a description of an event in the story.

Friday, November 29th 2019 - Day 0

- Students participated in reading centers and reading buddies (read books, played games and made fun hats).
- In Science, students began planning their electricity project.
- In ELA, students listened to chapter 6 and answered a comprehension questions. Students used the examplars they created yesterday.
- In Mathematics, students completed the following question: "Trace deux quadrilatères différents. D'après toi, quel est le plus petit nombres d’indices qu’on peut donner à une personne qu’elle trace une figure congruente à chacun des quadrilatères?" Then finished the morning with a quiz.

Thursday, November 28th 2019 - Day 5

- Students participated in Physical Education, Music and reading centers.
- In Mathematics, students identified 5 different parallelograms. Students identified that squares and rectangles can be classified as parallelograms since they have 2 pairs of parallel lines. Students then worked with a peer to classify quadrilaterals into different categories. (Quiz in Mathematics tomorrow)

Students sorted the quadrilaterals:
-  based on angles
- horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines
- lengths of sides
- set of parallel lines
- number of perpendicular corners
 - area

- In ELA, students collaborated with one another to classify the comprehension question answers of  based on levels of learning (1 to 4).

Wednesday, November 27th 2019 - 4 

- In Mathematics, students combined our flexible strategies to find the product. Ex. 38 x 2 could be solved by rounding 38 to 40. Then subtracting two groups of two. 40 x 2 = 80, 80 - 4 = 76. Students then reflected upon everything they knew about a quadrilateral shape they choose. 
- In Social Studies, students continued to identify the verb "avoir/have" in their text. Then they underlined the verb after avoir. Students examined the pattern. When writing in past tense, the verb avoir is in front of another verb. That verb usually ends in é. Students then worked on their presentations. 
- Students participated in physical education and reading centers. 
- Ask me what I did in English!

Tuesday, November 26th 2019 - Day 3

- In Mathematics, we reviewed our geometry vocabulary. We examined 4 sided shapes that are similar (semblable) and different. Students learned about quadrilaterals and began identifying common quadrilaterals. Ask me what is quadrilateral.
- In Science, students identified different appliances that uses electricity. Ask me about the different classifications of machines that use electricity. Our work is uploaded to Iris.
- In ELA, as a class we finished chapter 4 of our novel study.
- Students participated in physical education, music, reading centers and visited the library for book exchange.



Homework: 20 minutes daily

Monday, November 25th 2019 - Day 2

- In Mathematics, students continued to identify and describe 2-dimensional shapes. Students continue to work on using parallel, perpendicular and congruent shapes. Today, we introduced horizontal and vertical lines.
- In Science, students reviewed their conclusions from our Science experiment from last week about the impact of an electric circuit on a compass. What is the connection between magnetism and electricity?
- In Social Studies and FLA, students read about the abundance of cod fishing that occurred in the Atlantic region in Canada. After reading for comprehension, as a class and with a peer, students then identified different variations of the verbs "avoir".  We are continuing our work identifying parts of speech in French. We are currently focusing on identifying the subject and verb in a sentence.
- In ELA,
- Students participated in physical education and reading centers.

Wednesday, November 20th 2019 - Day 1

- Students participated in physical education and reading buddies.
- In Mathematics, we read the book "Mummy Math" to introduce our geometry unit. Then using shapes and geoboards students identified, described and created shapes that have parallel lines, perpendicular lines and shapes that are congruent.
- In Social Studies, students continued preparing their presentation about natural resource.
- In ELA, we continued to read chapter 2 and 3 of the City of Ember. We are working on describing the main character.







Conferences:
- Mme Edgett will be in the music room from 3:30 to 7:30.
- M. Trevor will be in the gym.

Homework: Reminder that homework should not exceed 20 minutes daily. Students are encouraged to complete what they can within the time frame.

- Yearbook forms are due next Friday.
- Shoeboxes are required for Nov. 25th 2019
- For our upcoming science project, we are seeking used or old indoor Christmas lights for our Science project. If you are about to recycle your old set, please send them in to the school.

Tuesday, November 19th 2019 - Day 6

- Students participated in reading centers.
- In Mathematics, students completed a Number Talk that focused on using the strategy of annexer le zéro. Then students practiced a series of questions. As a class, we reviewed the procedure of how to multiply two digits by two digits. Students then independently practiced, in the journal. Students finished the period by drawing and writing about what they know about geometry.
- In Social Studies, student began preparing their presentation about natural resource.
- In Science students demonstrated and interpreted evidence of magnetic fields around magnets and around current-carrying wires, by use of iron filings or by use of one or more compasses.
- In ELA, we continued to read chapter 2 of the City of Ember.



Conferences:
- Mme Edgett will be in the music room from 3:30 to 7:30.
- M. Trevor will be in the gym.

Homework:
- Students have a double sided Math facts sheet to complete and hand in on Wednesday, Nov. 20th 2019.

- Students participated in music, physical education and reading centers
- In Science, students wrote their conclusion to the following question. Quel materiaux sont des conducteurs d'electricite et quels sont des isolants? Students focused on identifying the subject in the sentence (noun/pronom and the verb). 
- In Social Studies, students began planning for their oral presentation. 
- In Mathematics, students applied what they have learned about patterns, strategies and process to answer the following question.Quels autres nombres entiers peuvent être multipliés pour obtenir le même produit que 48 x 18? Explique ton raisonnement. Students then continued to practice the procedure of multiplying two digits by two digits.

- In Mathematics students completed Tarsia puzzles to review their 9 times table number fact. Then students worked in teams to complete a Tarsia puzzle while solving 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication questions.
- In Science, students attend a presentation about renewable and non-renewable energy. Students then spend times in times creating an invention that makes the most of renewable energy. Students then shared their ideas with peers from Grade 5.
- Students had the opportunity to exchange books at the library.

Thursday, November 14th 2019 - Day 4 

- In Mathematics, students verified their work from yesterday. Then they played a game. They finished the lesson by learning about the procedure of solving a two digit by two digit multiplication question. 
- Students participated in Physical Education and reading centers. 
- In ELA, students compared their notes about the first chapter with a peer. (Examples of setting descriptions. (Time, Sense, Location).As a class, we answered:  How did Jean DuPrau sneak in powerful examples of setting that help to build atmosphere, suspense, and a feeling of "being there"? 
- In Science, students experimented with which objects are conductive and which a non-conductive. Students will be writing their conclusions tomorrow.

Times for the November Parent/Teacher Conferences
Hello families,

Just a reminder that November's Parent/Teacher Conferences for Kindergarten to Grade 5 are next THURSDAY, November 21 from 8:00 am - 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm - 7:30 pm.  There is no school for students on Thursday.

On Wednesday, November 20, our Kindergarten students have Student/Involved Conferences so their is no classes for Kindergarten on Wednesday, November 20.  Grades 1-5 have regular school on Wednesday.

Friday is a Professional Learning Day for teachers so there is no school for students on this day.

The conference booking system opens tomorrow at 4:00 for families.

Wednesday, November 13th 2019 - Day 3 

- Students participated in a session with Elder Randy. Homework: Ask me about what I learned? What I wonder?
- In Mathematics, students participated in a Number Talk. Our discussion focused on identifying efficient strategies to identify the product. The strategy we focused on was using a base ten fact to identify the product. Students then completed independent practice. Some students completed their exit slip from yesterday and other played a fluency game. 
- Students participated in Physical Education, Music, Reading Centers and went to the library to exchange our books. 
- In ELA, students read the first chapter of "The city of Ember". Students highlighted examples of setting descriptions. (Time, Sense, Location). Exit slip question: How did Jean DuPrau sneak in powerful examples of setting that help to build atmosphere, suspense, and a feeling of "being there"?

Monday, November 12th 2019 - Day 2

- In Mathematics, students continued to develop their conceptual and procedural understanding on multiplying two digits by two digits. Student also completed an exit slip.
- In Social Studies, students reviewed their notes about their region and began to decide how they were going to present their research to their peers.
- In Science, students learned about the scientific methods and the components.  As a class, we identified the different variables. Question: What materials are conductive and which are non-conductive? Ask me the difference between the following variables: à observer? à contrôler? à manipuler?
- In FLA, students identified different patterns of the ending of verbs relating to electricity experiences. Students then played a game to review those specific verb endings. Student completed their task by writing a prediction to their science question. Students practiced underlining their verbs in green and referring to examples.
- Students participated in Physical Education with M.Trevor and a rotation of guided reading.

Thursday, November 7th 2019 - 1 

- Students participated in Phys. Ed and reading centers. 
- In Social Studies, students continued their research about their natural resource. 
- We read "Attention Dragon" and reviewed safe practices when encountering a stranger. 
- Mme Courtney had a class discussion with the students about kindness and learning expectations. 
- Students finished the day with a work period. Some students improved their videos. Others finished their art work. 



For our Friday November 8th 10:30am Remembrance Day Assembly students who are brownies, sparks, scouts or guides are welcome to wear their uniform and participate in the procession into the gym. 

Homework: 
1. Reading in French for 20 minutes. Students have been working on identifying the problem of story, describing the main character and identifying the lesson or message of the story. 

Due Friday: Students must bring in their answers to the following three questions. Students are to bring the book they are reading with them.

Wednesday, November 6th 2019 - Day 6 

- In Mathematics, students completed an open-ended questions about multiplication.Then students worked with a peer and then independently to represent multiplication problem using base ten blocks. 
- In Science, students used iron fillings, magnets and electromagnetic circuits to examine and comparer the magnetic field and the strengths of different circuits. Students created schematic diagrams to represent their observations.
- Students created cinquain poems about peace in our community, province, country and the world. Students then wrote their poems inside of an origami dove. 
- Students also participated in reading centers and Social Studies.







For our Friday November 8th 10:30am Remembrance Day Assembly students who are brownies, sparks, scouts or guides are welcome to wear their uniform and participate in the procession into the gym.

Tuesday, November 5th 2019 - Day 5

- We read the book Le chien du soldat. Students answered comprehension questions about the story and identified symbols of war and of peace in the book. Students then create art using pastel chalk to represents symbols of peace and war. Students choose colours that would emphasize the symbols.
- As a class, we complete a demonstration of the effects of a short circuit using a closed circuit with steel wool. Ask me about how friction plays a role in the burning of the steel wool! Then students applied what they have learned about open, closed and short circuits. They worked with a peer to create a game. Ask me about the game!
- Students also went to physical education, music and participate in a rotation of literacy centers.

Monday, November 4th 2019 - Day 4


- In Mathematics, students examined and identified patterns in the 9 times table column and row. Students then reviewed how to use their hands to identify the product of a factor multiplied by 9. Students then applied their conceptual and procedural understanding to solve an open-ended multiplication. 

 - In Science, students reviewed how to build a short circuit. As a class we reviewed our answers and made connections to ideas and concepts we already knew about short circuits. Questions: What happens? Why does the light turn off? Where is the electrons going? Why does it warm up? Why is it dangerous to have appliances with stripped wires? Students then improved the quality of their answers and included specific examples. 

-  In ELA, students identified two topics they would like to write a cinquains poem. Students then use their understanding of parts of speech to create two poems.

Homework: 
1. Reading in French for 20 minutes. Students have been working on identifying the problem of story, describing the main character and identifying the lesson or message of the story. 

Due Friday: Students must bring in their answers to the following three questions. Students are to bring the book they are reading with them. 
a. Identify problem and explain why it is the problem. 
b. Describe the main character (physically, personality)
c. Identify the lesson/message of the story and describe it. 

2. Shoeboxes are required for our upcoming Science project. Please begin sending them in prior to Nov. 25th 2019. 

3. Students exit slips for Mathematics are being sent home to review and be signed by a parent/guardian. In addition, last weeks French self-assessment has been attached.  Due back on Tuesday.
